So long Art Shell, whose gonna be the next loser?
Oh how the mighty silver and black have fallen
Giving somewhat equal time to the Raiders (after my comments recently on the situation with the Arizona Cardinals), here's a few thoughts about their coaching situation now that Art Shell is being dumped there.
My suggestion: Al Davis should beat feet as fast as he possibly can, if not faster, to make some sort of deal to bring in Bill Cowher. Don't let him even get a chance to rest or relax. Pay whatever you have to pay in compensation to the Steelers, and get him to take the job. Once done, back the heck off and let him run the team. Let him bring discipline back to the team, and especially discipline back to the Defense.
Will it happen? eh, probably not. Al Davis isn't stupid, but he's not that bright either. He's stubborn, as evidenced by his pretty much chasing away "Chuckie" Gruden after he'd gotten them back to the top, or almost top, of the heap. He chased away some other coaches over time too, many of which were not that bad, all things considered, and lately has seemed to make things worse with each move he's made.
It's time for a home-run, hail mary type play, and that would be what he'd get by bringing in someone like Cowher.
Either way, the Raiders have a long way to go to get back to their glory days. The Silver and Black aren't so much feared as sneered at now. They're so dysfunctional, and have so many needs, well, it seems that they're only marginally worse than the Redskins (who have been near the epitome of underperforming, overpaid, over-hyped, and over-the-hill football players lately). Seriously, they need to clean house, and bring in someone that can run things in an organized, team oriented manner.
If not Cowher, then perhaps they might wish to wait and make a run for Tom Coughlin who is almost certain to be cut loose soon after the Giants make an early, totally confused, exit from the playoffs (coming up this weekend, on TVs near you). Either way, they need help in a big way. I'd like to at least see them brought back to a competitive level, so please Al, get it right this time.
