sigh...downloaded first part but won't run...i am bitter...

i downloaded the first part (galciv 1.01)
159MB, 410 files, 9 folders after it extracted itself. it asked me if i wanted to start the game, but i said no so i could shut down stuff in the background. when i went to the start menu and selected galciv to play, the startup screen showed up: a starbase with the title. unfortunately no buttons for me to click appeared. all i saw was the starbase with the greyish white background on the right(the one with the human emblem embossed) where the buttons probably go.
after i moved my mouse around and clicked randomly trying to get something to happen, my computer started screeching using its internal speaker everytime i moved my optical mouse. i couldn't ctrl-alt-del out, nor alt-tab, nor ctrl-esc.
after doing a hard reboot i tried to play again and the same thing happened.
i have a dell 600mhz
tnt2 nvidia
512mb ram
stardockcentralrc1.exe was the stardock i used
(.99c, 145 build 2)d/l over a comcast cable modem.
i had not downloaded the multimedia yet. i assumed i could play it without the multimedia because it asked me whether i wanted to play as soon as it was done self extracting.
i want to express my bitterness so here goes- next time i am going to just buy from a store. my cd won't arrive for a few days, i am not sure if my d/l was screwed up, and i don't know if d/ling the multimedia is a good idea since the actual game doesn't work right now. had i bought it tomorrow(er, today) i would have had more sleep since i stayed up late for this, probably would be playing sooner, and been freer to do stuff since i could leave my computer alone instead of checking every 15 minutes to make sure my connection was ok.
i tried to d/l instead of buy since all this stuff seemed relatively easy. but since i ran into troubles i wonder if i did anything horrifically wrong.
for example, i told stardock central to d/l the mutli media and while it was doing that i decided to play a few minutes of galciv to test her out. was that wrong?
since i am writing this at 2:13am i hope i don't sound like a mean incoherent drunk...goodnight
