Comp talk

and yours too, if you want.
just lets try and get mine done first
some advice from my forumites, awesome advice btw:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115003

nice, will do
thats 50 bucks...
why is the DVD drive beige? And the case black?

I found a black one half a fricking year ago, but I guess it got sold out

I would appreciate a combo drive thats black (preferably at equal speed or faster) writing DVDs is not my concern, running them and CDs is. although from what I hear they all write now . I'm not really concerned with vanity, I Just want the thing to work.
Yes, the E6600 is a great buy. It can pretty much chug through anything SupCom throws at it (unless you try playing against 7 Supreme AIs on one machine...the game slowed down to about a tenth its normal speed before crashing... ). For me, the only real cap on the game is my graphics card (GeForce 7900 GS), but I can run it on high fidelity settings and get awesome results, though it does tend to slow every now and then...hopefully as the patches continue, the game will be further optimized (a big patch released not too long ago tinkered with more sensitive stuffs pertaining to unit pathfinding, with positive results), and the stand-alone title will help this situation even more, even if it's for a price...

well then, its settled isnt it!

ok, now here are the problems I have and why, I'm not a computer person so just try to stick to layman speak pls.
1) Combo drive
a) biggest concern is that it might be a bit slow, would appreciate a faster one for a comparable price
b) its beige... its vain but I would like a black one
2) Hard Drive
a) its quick, but its capacity is small, would like a similar but larger one. (I'm talking about the 74 gig one, not the 150 gig I found)
b) I would prefer a quiet one, but its not my main concern.
3) video card
a) sounds like its enough, but I'm not tech savvy
4) motherboard
a) dunno really... compared to the quality of the rest of my parts it doesnt really stand up, from what I hear it hardly affects performance, but its the central unit so I want to make sure
b) give me all the dewhickies that you can find (for not too much more expensive)
5) comp in general
a) I want all the parts to fit, I think that makes sense
b) I hope it wont overheat too much, this is an expensive computer.

and out of curiousity, just how powerful can a processor get? do they come in gradations of .8GHz?

and as always, thanks for the advice guys

would be nice if I showed you the parts, wouldnt it?

I've never used Asus, but they must be ok, since they are a top board maker, and I have 3 other friends I know are using Asus. Are you sure you aren't rubbing magnets all over your board, and or rubbing your feet on the rug before touching it?

A brand new DOA mobo from Asus is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Could be a short?  You put the padded washer things between the motherboard mounting screws and the case, yes?
kosc, I'm not an idiot. Yarlen, I'm no fool.

of course, I did everything with the utmost care, I grounded myself every two minutes, wore the antistatic bracelet and mounted everything properly. the motherboards were absolute bogus crap, I dont know how to phrase it better. I'm done with ASUS.

I got the same mobo from ASUS, mine is just with "32" added to its name.

I also had those frezes, but to fix it you gotta get the bios update, and put it on a USB storage disk.

Then you start up the PC, go into the bios NOTHING ELSE, keep pressing the "DEL" key until it happens. (maybe remove all other hardware to make it as stable as possible)

From the bios enter the flash section and find the USB device and install the update.

If it doesnt work, your doing something wrong

that happened on my last build, didn't realize it until my IDE ports weren't working, lol....

you can get a new bios by orderinga new bios chip. you can get them online, just have to know what type of chip your motherboard has. it's really easy to remove and put in a new one. As for your power supply, 500W I'm not sure is enough power man. A lot of times I have hardware errors on other computers was cause of a poor power supply or lack of power. It's why I always go for power supplys around 700-800W. Anyway. Hope that helps

Never mind what i said above, should have reading abit more

But as Tristan said, its properly the PSU, and if that aint enough get the updated bios chip.

This I do believe is the longest computer related thread I have ever seen...

the computer place tried the PSU, thats not it either. how about you guys not assume I did something wrong?
Maybe the computer place doesn't know what it is doing...
I didn't say it was broken, I was saying it may not be powerful enough

For what is in the case, 500w power supply should be fine.
what are the actual specs, cause his list says he has an intel board, and he says he's running an asus...

Addendum to the above post.

Here's a good guideline to reliable PSUs

BUT does it put butter and jam on the toast?

1) yes, it runs smoothly on just about anything I've thrown at it, it only became just slightly bumpy when I went 3 player 1000 unit cap (we werent that high though, its misleading) on gentlemen's isle (we took up the whole map) in supcom. I have to say, thats pretty damn impressive for anything I've seen

is there a way to lower the angle of the screen in supcom? I kindof dislike the topdown mode.

2) my parents have forbidden me from opening the computer, they're convinced its bad luck

3) it does, but it gets peanut butter all gucked up in the fans

hahah, my college/gaming PC I built for myself:

Intel Mobo (I'm too lazy to go through the entire model)
4 GB RAM (I forget timing)
8800 GTX
800 Watt Power Supply (yes, my computer runs on souls)
250GB Sata HD
DVD RW drive I think 16x
3.6 (total) GhZ Dual Core Processor (I think E6700)

It runs like a dream.
cost? $1600 American
3.6 (total)

What does that mean? Are you adding the two cores together there?

I'd love to upgrade my Ram to match your 4GB... in fact, I think thats the next upgrade I'm getting (followed closely by Vista to use DX10 on my GTX, a new case, and maybe a new HD that runs faster than the HP "hand-me-down" I'm currently using).

Yes I am... It's 1.8 Ghz. I might upgrade my processor later, if I need it and based on funds.

Don't blame ya. I'm thinking about Vista, but I want to wait until the bugs are kinked out a bit more. I can get it for $99 because of being a college student, which is nice.

I'd really like the DX10 graphics, now that games (that I'm interested in) are coming out with it. And having a 64 bit edition OS would help free me of the 4GB limit so I can actually use anything past 3 GBs, since my 8800GTX eats up nearly a gigs worth of the memory allocation.
