Inviting friends to my empire...How ?

Hi,

I just created an empire in 'Invite only' mode and want to invite some friends. The problem is that I only have a textfield to put a client's ID to promote him from Overlord to senator. How to just invite a friend and put him in Overlord ? Does he have to initiate the invitation process ?
