hello darkness, my old friend

a conversation

Mr. Dark danced in
  No key
         bell
              salutary grunt
Mr. Dark danced in and sat down

"What do you want, minister of evil?"
"More religious rants?"

Ashen
      Cold
Is that flesh or bone?
Funny
where's the motion when he speaks?
"Say your disquiet -- the only wit you have begins with t. -- and leave"

Do skulls ponder?
"Why do you bother?"
   Deathly voice
Coffin scraped cross cold concrete floors voice
"No-one cares
             No-one has
                       No-one will"

Arguing wastes energy
                      (so little energy now
                       so cold now)
Ignorance invites more

"Tell it to someone who cares"
"I did."

Deathly silence
Odd phrase
Has anybody ever really died of silence?
"You know the answer"
Do skulls smirk?

"Silence kills.
               Quiet in here, huh?
                                  But then
"No-one cares
             No-one has
                       No-one will"

Resistance is futile
"Then die, king of silence!
                           Better still than faithless friends
                                             cutting words
blood dripping from blackened lips of ravening fools."

Hmm -- skulls laugh
"Talk of 'friends,' fool!
          success
          happiness
          life
          love,
               fool."
Anticipation radiates off Mr. Dark
"Tell me of unicorns and nessies and 'god' while you're at it."
Does death hope?

"Preach to your choir --
                        There's a morgue nearby.
                        Need a lift?"
"I'm already there."

"Leave me
         dark demon of eternal night!"
"You opened the door"
"There is no door!"
Funny how laughter can echo
"The Kingdom of Darkness is within"

Mr. Dark danced in
  No key
         bell
              salutary grunt
Mr. Dark danced in and sat down

Good piece, Gene...it needed a comment.

For some reason, I was reminded of Johnny Cash's "To Beat the Devil".

gene, my art garfunkel passion got me with your (very apt) title, and your expression of the arrival of darkness unheralded by any warning drew me in.

"talk of friends, fool" ... the scorn for friendships ... their truth being, as you say, sometimes as difficult to believe in as any imaginary horror.

i found this very moving and beautiful.
