GalCiv I won't start

I just bought the galciv ultimate edition over the weekend and can't get it to run at all. I'm running on Vista Ultimate x64 and when i try to launch galciv (either from impulse, the start menu, or running galciv.exe directly) the screen flickers and then retuns to the desktop. It does look like the resolution changes temporarily.

But that's it, game doesn't start. Any ideas?
