p.s. Star Wars started a long, horrible nosedive into mediocrity after episode IV. George Lucas forgot that he was a respectable whore and started acting like some kind of prophet of profit. Very, very sad. I'm an 'anti-Draak' here. Old-school BSG was kids' stuff but the reboot was awesome, not least because it ditched the candy-coating. Star Wars started out as a visionary trailblazer and ended up more like Micky D (mouse or hamburger or both).

I'm okay with the dark and gritty, but to have no characters which you can at least imagine yourself being able to comfortably have a drink with, that's pretty messed up. The original at least had heroes. I had trouble finding one that could come close. The best was Apollo, but it seemed like he was constantly in a state of self-delusion or taking LSD off screen.

I don't hate on Star Wars as much as Swicord. It's more like, okay, the first three were fun movies. Whatever. The prequels made me want to beat my head over a post.

As for pot-kettle: Just because a thief calls another thief a thief, doesn't means he's wrong.

Banned because the prequels were embarrassing. 

 

Whether or not you like the re-imagined BSG series is a matter of personal opinion. My favorite character by far was Commander/Admiral Adama. Followed by Baltar, just because after everything he did, he still got to be an 'enlightened' being.

Banned because you point directly to the different strokes for different folks thing. To some folks, cilantro is a wonderful addition many dishes, but to others it's just something that looks pretty much like parsley but tastes like soap. 

I had pretty a similar problem with the '70s BSG because I can't relate to cartoon heroes as real people. I can imagine having drinks with the new Baltar, Starbuck, or Adama because they are all much more human than their Cold War-era predecessors. And that despite the fact that they are fighting 'Cosmic Machine' enemies that are much more nuanced and scarier than the clumsy toasters in Larson's original work.

I did not, however, like either Adama, for exactly the reasons he mentions- they seemed too much like cardboard heroes here.

 

Kara was wonderful, as was Roslin, UNTIL THE LAST PART OF THE SHOW. Then both of them started acting more like traditional feminine figures. Baltar.... I dunno. He made a great antihero, but I'm also very sensitive to the way scientist are portrayed- I think I'd like his characterization a lot better if he had another profession.
