actually.. shoes, paper, fork / knives, hot water, email, google.. all of those are actually pretty great inventions that drastically changed the world.  Don't know why you pointed those out.. except for maybe why they're so low?

I think it's clear why I pointed them out, unless you too think Google is a greater 'invention' then hot water...

Hot water is a discovery, just like fire, electricity, timber, etc.  I would imagine it's not higher up on the list simply because many people have that same rationale (hence why fire and electricity aren't even on the list at all).

It existed before we came along.  Otherwise why isn't timber on that list?  We've learned several great uses for it just like for hot water, but it's not an invention.

What about the nuclear bomb? It's what stopped every country from simultaneously invading one another for the past seventy years.

You're talking about nukes and conductors... - what about vaccinations and other medical inventions...?

It's always difficult with this kind of question.  Most people answer with the greatest inventions according to their daily lives while others think about the long term impacts.  You'd need to get really specific to get any kind of meaningful answer.

Personally, the two greatest inventions in the history of the human race, in my opinion, are:
1. Farming.  Changed the human race from bands of nomads to centralised societies and allowed people to think about other things than simply their ability to provide food for the next day.
2. Transistor.  Basis for the microchip and the basis for the entire modern world and the future of the human race as a technologically adept species.

Their ommissions from that list worries me.

Having never been surveyed on this side of the pond, I wonder where they find their participants as well.  Perhaps at a soup kitchen?
