Wallpaper Moderators?

Wallpaper Moderators?

I was just curious if someone new is moderating the Wallpaper submissions.

I should probably just keep my mouth shut but I just can't any longer, now please don't anyone get defensive and pounce on me but all one has to do is look at the first few pages of submissions to realize that the quality of walls(with the exception of a few) is seriously going down hill. How is some of this stuff getting through moderation?

I don't claim to be an artist or anything, in fact I am pure amateur, but some of those...mmmm....I just don't get it.

I think there are many of you that would agree with me on this, the number of downloads on some of them speak loud and clear as to what most wincustomizer's are thinking.

Please don't be angry at me guys, this is just an observation over the last week or so, which has made me think there is new blood moderating the walls.

You mean 'French'

No, Styl Skinner. Le crayon means The pencil; but it can also mean The crayon. But not chalk. chalk is craie.

The walls are looked at differently as everyone has their own taste for what is good and what is well lets just say...the opposite. My stand point is from someone who has submitted their fair share of images and seen the qualtiy of work go down. I don't think that's wrong in saying....I mean, we are all artists great and small aren't we? I don't think an observation on the quality of work IMHO is bad, if we can't take criticsm why be put ourselves in a poisition to be criticised. I for one would rather get an honest opinion rather then having my feelings spared.

I'm just gonna say something here, that may or may not be accepted by the general public and admins.

Why dont we get a couple more moderators to help out the others? That way it would be less work for everyone.

This is going to sound very unlike me, but....frankly, I'm getting really sick of the whining about the wallpaper library.

People whine because their stuff isn't accepted.  They whine because all the walls look the same.  They whine because they think there is junk in the library.  They whine because they think that the moderation is too strict.  They whine because they think that the moderation is too tight.

It's "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

If you don't like stuff in the library, don't download it.

/me goes off to go buy some cheese.....

From my stand point I don't think I'm whining.....this is exactly why I don't bother with this website.....a group of people can't even discuss something here (in a manner which is not trying to insult anyone) and we get labeled as whiners! I for one don't get moderated that much....I don't think the moderators are strict...they need to be! I would rather help people make walls, which if you ask anyone who has came to me for help will tell you that I have helped them more then they thought I would. It seems to me that before someone says something they have to type a disclaimer of those who he is not trying to offend! Truly sad IMO I used to enjoy the messageboard but not anymore in the state it is.....too tensed up for my liking

Complaining/commenting on a drop in standards of recent wall approvals IS 'insulting' those whose works have been accepted recently....

The problem is that when viewing works as a whole you eventually see a shift in styles and usually an improvement in an established author's works.

GA...feel free to [privately] list for me the works considered below par accepted of late, and I'll respond with a list of established authors' earlier works which would be moderated now, in light of their subsequent improvement in later works, including some of yours.

KarmaGirl is right...we're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

We are either too restrictive [bastards rejected my wall] or now too liberal...[bastards let anything in].

Make up your mind, please!

I thought I'd covered things in my first posts here...

Well Jafo, I understand that it may be upsetting but I mean...people could totally blast walls which wouldn't help anyone, but if we can not express the quality of work in the walls then what is the point of the ratings? What is the point of commenting on a wall? Are we only able to say positive things? Should we always say good job even if we know it needs work. I just feel because the moderators accepted them, that doesn't mean we can't have a different point of view. You know how many times I've wanted to say a constructive comment because I saw an image that I felt could have been done better for what ever reason.....I decided not to because the way things are here, you almost can't with out being called rude, mean, insulting. I mean come on......none of us are perfect at this.....why shouldn't we let each other know what we really feel as long we do it constructively......

Note: The black crayon gives a deeper black than the lead pencil. This and the colored crayons are often called chalks. The red crayon is also called sanguine. See Chalk, and Sanguine

Ah well, french was never my best language... (my english isn't that good too... )

GA...it is one thing to comment that you don't like a particular wall...quite another to infer that either there is a new moderator or moderation standards are slipping.

One is a comment on an artwork, the other is a criticism of the admins' efforts.

Can you see the distinction?...

Again, 'you' is a general term, and not directed at a specific individual, OK?...

If you moderated it, is that an insult too?

We can't be perfect, if other people were moderators, other walls would be accepted. There is nothing wrong in my opinion to give some criticism based on knowledge. There is nothing wrong with not applying a suggested correction. There is something wrong though if you know there can be improvement and you do not apply it or try it in your next work. Regardless what kind of work.

Disclaimer: this has been a general objective comment.

just end it here and now.

For god sake where is the sign saying you must download every Wallpaper

Exactly there isn't one, and what you think is rubbish is another persons treasure.

Yes i would love to join the moderating but those who do it have a good knowledge of these things.

The ones you don't like leave a comment on them then complain after nothing changes cause at the moment your trying to grab thin air and lets face it....its getting you nowhere.

Its a shame great artists are leaving (Green Armani to name but one)but its alot easier to please when bad points are made to improve on than just being told your work sucks.

Personally I would scrap the whole wallpaper section in a second. It just causes too many fallings out. I fully expect the wallpaper artists to jump down my throat but I am past caring. I suspect it won't make any difference saying this and I may alienate some people but I know that I have to say this.

The wallpaper section for me always should have been about a place to upload a wall that goes with a specific skin. Not as a free for all. There are plenty of other sites which serve that purpose.

The advantages of not having the same wallpaper section would be:

1. Less bandwidth would be used. Generally walls are bigger than skins.

2. Less time spent critiquing walls and more time approving skins. Skins submitted get approved faster.

3. No reason for people to bicker on the messageboard about the moderators judgements on a wallpaper. Don't worry, people would find something else to bicker about anyway.

4. More enjoyment for those reading the messageboard.

The disadvantages:

1. Some artists may well leave because of it which would be a real shame.

2. Some artists who produce skins and walls may well leave which would be more of a shame.
(Yes I class those who produce skins as more important to me. I don't use walls unless they are exceptional and only then just so I can admire the image). I do use skins and as they are what will eventually make Stardock money that is a benefit to me as a subscriber. I want to see Stardock able to produce the things I dream about.

3. People will have to find something else to bicker about.

I may speak for myself but you are way off line here. Many who can't skin will tend to contribute by doing Walls like myself, yes there are many wall sites out there but none as good as this.

Not all of us bicker as you put it so why crucify us all for it?

those with a problem should deal with it themself rather than slander us for not being as talented as skinners. End of story.

I have always been pleased with the wallpaper section here at WC.
I believe it should remain to help complement the great skins being made.

I am unable to comprehend all the fuss that is being made over it, except that there seems to be a few who "thrive" on nothing more than praise and numbers, and if they have their way, will ruin it for the rest of us.

I get a lot of enjoyment looking at the wallpapers, using the ones I like, bringing them into my home because I can see the real people behind them by the art they make. I like to watch an artist develop such as has DarkMist. I remember his first and how he tried so hard until he found a way through the creation process giving us some real nice stuff to enjoy, while the process continues.

Too much emphisis is being placed on "Top Download" and "Top Authors'. If this is the only way some people have of measuring their own or anothers worth, then maybe they need to find someplace else to go, because I believe Wincustomize is built upon the worth of people behind the art.

It is not the art, but the artist that makes this site valuable, deny the artist whether a skinner or a wallpaper maker a place for expression, and WC will deny itself a place.

Very true words White Moth, sadly not all see it from the same light so to speak

oH boy.

I didn't get a chance to download his walls!!

(hey, that is the first time I used that emoticon in a while)

I do critical words on skins and wall and screenshots, and other stuff. I try to be constructive with it and not put the person down.

I also try to explain why I like something too; but most of the time I just say well done or Good Work (or Great Work).

I think the problem is:

a0
not knowing when to change the mood of the conversation on the board and knowing when to stop or take it to email or IM

b)
Not knowing how to be critical of something. it is a technique to it.

Also there is a pointing fingers of blame as to the downward fall of the board, but many can be blamed for that (even me ) and its not just the visitors or the admin.. a little more of both.

Also keep in mind that things go in cycles. There will be days where stuff gets through, there will be days where it doesn't. The message board also will go through cycles.

The real question is, are you going to help and change, or leave and let something you like self destruct?

If there is help needed as moderators, or you think they need help, then try to do so and contact them.

If there is a need to open an issue and discuss it, open it in a way that will hopefully spark ideas and constructive opinions. If someone post something 'wierdo' then try to help by streering the convo back to its origins.

The first place to change the enviornment is to change yourself.

Contacting a moderator and saying you need help isn't nice for them.

All you can do is wait, they know when they need it
Reply #50 Top
no I mean help the moderators moderate walls. (once you reach a certain level of time on wincusto)

Anyway, for some reference to what admins go through as to why they sometimes come off grumpy:
