How do you know it's the game's memory management? Windows is notorious for being incapable of managing it's memory effectively, let alone efficiently. Part of the reason for the hundreds of third party memory managers out there.

Lords of Magic offered a few neat additions to the genre too, aside from realtime combat: Espionage being dependent on the amount of contact with a faction. The more often you traded, spoke and interacted with a faction, the more you knew about them and the more accurate that information was. Of course, your thieves could spy or even interrogate prisoners to find more information, but it was a nice way of linking diplomacy and espionage. Kind of makes sense too, you don't spend several

As I understand it... 1. Does the computer use the available ability points for the players controlled by him, or should I do it for him? Most races have their points allocated by default, though in the case of those with points left over I believe the computer assigns them in a semi-random manner. 2. If I want the players controlled by the comp to be something else then federalists, should I do it mys

you mean they are materialists . It's a materialistic beliefs than the mind and brain is the same and "I" is nothing but an illusion created by the brain. It's also provable with simple electromagnets. By inducing a magnetic field to interfere with the functioning of your frontal lobes, I can disconnect your sense of self from the body (it's actually a rather interesting experiment if you ever find yourself in a position to try it, it feels

Apologies for the double post, didn't want to create a single huge one. Being that writing was established long before the New Testament was made, and being that Jesus knew many literate people (a tax collector, many religious leaders), I would say it is very unlikely that Christianity could be included as one of the religions based largely upon oral tradition, as they likely had plenty of writings at the time. True as far as the New Testam

I just find it sad that someone would not believe in SOME type of "afterlife" or God. The most depressing thing I can think of is that there is nothing beyond or better than the life you have now. There's two things you can say to yourself with that belief : "if annihilation is the ultimate end, why do anything?", the alternative is "if annihilation is the ultimate end, why not do anything?". If you reject belief in an

Twilight of the Gods The problem with this type of thing is the randomness. It could easily take a game you're winning at and make it hopeless for you. I'm more in favor of events that affect all civs more-or-less equally (like the jagged edge) Isn't that the purpose of a mega-event? I don't think the ra

But one of the main issue to me here is that if I have the first shot advantage, why does the defender always destroy my ships? What race were you playing? Unless you have the super warrior ability both sides go simultaneously in combat.

Couple of suggestions, some based on other ideas: Twilight of the Gods For some mysterious reason, the universe appears to be dying. Each turn a random planet (populated or not) is removed from the game (or explodes into an asteroid field). Should make things a little more interesting. I wouldn't hold my breath for Linux becoming a big deal for gaming any time soon. The simple fact is most publishers would rather code for the bigger market. Since Microsoft seem intent on tying in the Xbox & Windows into a unified base, they're going to have a huge advantage in that respect. Even should the entire home PC market convert to Linux, it still doesn't match the console market in terms of profitability.

I am also getting the bug where mining ships don't start mining automatically when they travel a longer distance to an asteroid. I have to move them off one space and then move them back if they travel too far to the asteroid. I get that sometimes too. You can just click 'build' on the ship panel to have it start construction, rather than wasting a turn moving around.

I'm not sure where this comes from, but it's really all about the sliders. If there were no sliders, you'd have to have both labs and factories in each planet, which kinda goes well with a certain dose of realism Not necessarily, you can still benefit from hitting the specialised production buttons (though to a lesser extent if the slider wasn't there too). As for the labs & factories issue, AFAIK you need the relevant building on any bonus t

In terms of proximity, which one do you think makes more sense? Notice why I gave that example. It doesn't really matter, since the entire concept of research is abstracted. Technically, how comes the same factories can produce both interstellar vessels and sports stadiums? How comes the same lab can research high energy weapons, medicine and recreation? I'd rather have it abstracted to generic production/research/morale pools than micromanage

So howcome Embassies, for instance, don't contribute to research? Actually, it should be in diplomacy buildings that you should "research" the government forms, and trade techs, and related stuff. How many Ambassadors do you know who've come up with entirely new lines of government? Each building has its purpose, and it sh

Unfortunately the negotiations for that did not work out, so it won't be happening. You want us to go round and break their legs for ya? Any idea when we'll be getting more than teasers for this new fantasy game? Also, is it going to be called Magic of Masters? <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Tongue.gif" border=

I have been a programmer/IT manager/developer for 20 years (and it's always 20 years -- not 5, not 10, not 25, but 20) Yeah. Go ask anyone it IT precisely how much computer knowledge people in those roles have and see what response you get (actually, you might want to take some lead shielding along ). To quote an old website, in most industries you get made a

The crux of my ire revolves around reactions regarding the strategy I described where you use all factories or all labs on all of your planets to maximize your production per turn. I'm sorry many of you see it as an exploit. If one defines an exploit as playing the game in a way not intended (playing the system rather than the game, if you see what I mean) they have a good argument. Quite why they complain about it I don't know, unless you're goi

Depends on a number of things, from how big the universe is to the various events and similar. Sometimes you'll have AI's surrendering in the early game, other times you can play through the entire game and still not see an AI surrender. You can always start a game with only the less aggressive races, tends to make for a more peaceful galaxy.

Yeah, have they actually changed any of the sounds in the Beta, or is there a few things lacking sound out there I haven't found yet?
