Wow...  You bought a lot of Stargate.

I'd put Atlantis after the first five seasons of SG-1, those are just plain badass, but before the decline.  It's way better than the post-gould ori arc.  About the time the cast started ditching SG-1, it was past time to kill the slow.  I'm rather glad they ended Atlantis before they went too long with it.

You've already reached where they launch the Atlantis expedition in SG1, they'll reference each other occasionally.  If you really want to you can watch them in order, but it's not necessary.  They maintain continuity, but don't leave you wondering wtf is going on as long as you have the gist of the two shows.

So I should buy Atlantis and watch season 1 at the same time has I am watching SG-1 season 8?

I would rate SG-1 better than Atlantis, overall. It had a bit of a rough start in the first 2 seasons or so, but after that it picked up nicely. SG-1 has the benefit of being set against the backdrop of common mythology (Egyptian and Norse primarily, and some King Arthur fables towards the end) so it's interesting how they make you think and realize how in the SG-world the ancient and powerful civilizations shaped Earth's culture and mythology.

Atlantis doesn't get the benefit of that, it's purely a spin-off show. There are some loose tie-ins and some crossing story arcs here and there, but from a story perspective it's nothing terribly amazing. The visuals are neat enough and there are some rather epic episodes, but ultimately I think it was a show without much central direction or "goal". The writers wasted some great opportunities for plot arcs along the way, and dwelled on others long enough to make it very groan-worthy ("Oh god, not this bad guy again.." sort of thing).

From the action perspective, you would probably like Atlantis better (though once the Ori came into play, SG-1 had its share of flashyness). From a story perspective, SG-1 can beat Atlantis hands down. Atlantis just can't match the epic-ness of the stories of SG-1, like Anubis kidnapping Thor to gain the Asgard knowledge, and the buildup/showdown between the Ascended Daniel and half-ascended Anubis.

The Ori arc in SG-1 is a bit clunkier since it's tied to King Arthur fables which aren't as natural of a fit as Egyptian and Norse mythos, so I would say SG-1 is at its best in the middle.

It have go well and more long that planned... normally, in fall2007, SCI FI channel have planned the start for Stargate Universe... But the the writer's strike put a hold on the project. Now, Stargate Universe is currently in development. First episode in 2009...

The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago, one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can. The experiment is to send a ship across the universe, and to send one ahead of it to seed the galaxies with Stargates, and that they would one day use the stargate's ninth chevron to gate to the ship. Millions of years ago (before their conflict with the Wraith and even before they moved Atlantis to the Pegasus Galaxy), the show would reveal, the Ancients sent out two ships: an automated vessel to place Stargates throughout multiple galaxies in our universe, and a second ship to follow up and explore. A standard, 7-symbol gate address allows for travel within the same galaxy. Use of the Stargate's eighth chevron allows for travel to a different galaxy. And the ninth chevron will allow the team to reach this second Ancient ship, the Destiny.

When Atlantis came back to Earth, it was using the full complement of 3 ZPMs. How much power is left in them is anyones guess. Given that the premise for SGU has the check it out team stuck on the Destiny, I think we can make some guesses.
