With gigantic maps, it's definitely going to be a RAM issue. I had the same problems with Civ IV a few months ago - I had an XP2000+/512/6600GT, and it was choking at 1024x768, no AA, with normal-sized maps. Added another 512 MB RAM and everything became nice and smooth. That's probably what you're experiencing here. The power was out at my company this morning, so I stopped by my local EB Games at around 10:30 this morning, hoping my pre-order had finally arrived. The helpful staff cracked open the shipment (which had just arrived) and there it was! No Collector's Edition, unfortunately, but at least now I can play it.

I had a similar experience with EB Games - I only received my game today (Feb 27) at their closest retail location (where I pre-ordered it), and not in Collector's Edition trim. I was having some serious issues trying to register using GalCiv2.com - they included a wide variety of error messages, and when it "sent off an email for verification" (I tried this several times with various addresses at my domain), I never received those emails. And I'm not just talking about waiting a few minutes, I gave them a few *days*. Then I tried what someone else suggested - try one of the affiliated sites, such as stardock.net -
