Failed to initialize display in The Political Machine 2004 Stardock Forums

I'm trying to start The Political Machine 2008 on my Eee PC 1000h with a GMA950 integrated graphics-card and it crashes instantly with the error message 'Failed to initialize display'. the original Political Machine demo works well on this computer, as long as I change the resolution to at least 1024x768, but that doesn't seem to do the trick here. I'd be grateful if anyone can help me out with this problem.
