Vaelzad, A Star Control galaxy of the size proposed sounds pretty good to me. I think an area is 'too big' when there's no reason or reward for continued exploration. I mean, if everything beyond a certain point looks like everywhere else, there's nothing new to do, and I start feeling like I'm exploring for the sake of it, that's probably when I'd hang up the space boots.
