I've run into this too, and have been usually unable to stop the defection - usually to one of the independents. Several times I have started wars to recover "my" worlds, but that's a pretty blunt approach. Lots of ships in orbit *seems* to help, but I don't really have the data to back this suspicion up. Anyone know for sure?

I think this refers to techs that must be researched to open new paths to more advanced techs. I have been grouping them by type, so have not really used it this way , but that's my guess. ;p You might want to check out the PDF tech tree on JavaScout's site (huge help): http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/

Heh, glad to see I'm not the only one... ;) I have administered a few UBBS sites, and like that software, but there's a TON of good code out there. If it's a question of administering, I get the impression that there are a number of veterans here that might be persuaded to moderate various forums. I'll be interested to see what the Avatars have to say about it all. :)

For the record, I'm really impressed by this game. However, I am wondering if there is any plan to get a more flexible threaded forum system in here at some point? This thing is getting harder and harder to sift out the signal from the noise due to the linear nature of the forum structure. With the popularity of GalCiv growing so fast, I can see swamping coming fast. It would really be helpful to have some categories (especially for beginners looking for suggestions and clarifactions).<

I've got to agree. I have spent many, many hours trying like hell to like MOO3, but until such time as it undergoes a pervasive AI patch, I am not spending any more time on it. There is a shining pearl buried in that mess, and I hope like hell that the clumsy dev team has the stones to get it perfected. It's really not fair to compare the two games too closely - they have wildly different approaches to the genre, and I see no point in coming down solidly for one or the other. If you onl

Making money: research Trade and get some good trade routes started. Also be sure to upgrade your government when you get the opportunity - your economy seems to strengthen, and you just need to try and keep the taxes low enough to maintain your clawhold on the senate. Also, I avoid buying ships or structures on the "sure, we'll lease it to you for 30 years" option. If you can get away with it, try the cash option, or the leases will bleed you white. Don't overlook the social modules fo

Aha. Good info, all - thanks. Anyone know how the heck to use the artificial planets tech? I am assuming that it allows you to build words where none exist, but that's just a guess, since the game info on it seems to be non-existent. Has anyone actually used the tech in any way, or is it just a stepping stone?

I almost always get them in the setup screen if I click on details about a faction - as soon as I click *done* it CTDs. Also have gotten one so far after a game save after palying for a few hours.

WTG Javascout! Very helpful info, and well laid-out. It's good to see the holes getting filled in; I'd hate to see this game get trashed in the mainstream game media because of it's amateurish manual and in-game spelling errors. I look forward to seeing all the little glitches worked out so it can be the MOO3 killer (which it already is, IMHO). :D

Just be thankful you did not have to figure the game out from the gawd-awful so-called PDF that you get with the online version. It looks like a mimeograph of a fax of a grave-rubbing... Is there a *clear* PDF out there yet? There are serious content (lacking) problems with it too, but that's another issue. ;)

Yep, I am a MOO3 refugee too, and so far I can already tell that I'm going to get a lot more mileage out of GalCiv - at least for the forseeable future. The two games are comparable but different enough that I think each has a lot to offer; it's just that MOO3 has a lot to offer in the *future* somewhere, once it gets out of its "public alpha" phase. :p In many ways, MOO3 was the best thing that could have happened to GalCiv. GalCiv has restored my faith in the genre. Be inter

Single file is the way to go here, guys. I *almost* gave up on it before getting it to install directly the HDD and bypassing the archive entirely. The archive functions are "challenged," to say the least. I definitely don't want to have to relay on Stardock as my restore path in the future. Makes a good argument for making sure to get the CD, though... ;)
