Admittedly, I'm a pure user; I lack the artistic (and coding) skill to create a GUI I would want to use. There is some wait-time for me when I go to change an image, but nothing like you're experiencing: mine takes about 20 seconds, if that. Are you pulling up just one folder's worth of images to select from, or all images? If your .png collection is enormous and you're loading ALL of them to pick from at once, I can see why it might take a bit...

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaahhh... I think I'll be switching off AutoUpdate for a good long while. I'm sure SP2 does increase security, but turning my 'puter into a door-stop isn't the security upgrade I had in mind. Besides, after doing some reading up on it, it looks like 3rd-party apps do a better job than SP2 anyway. I have a hard time sympathizing with those on here who are complaining about paying $20 ($15 for ODNT subscribers) for what is a VERY nice piece of software. I'm more than willing to put out the $15 for this it's a well-crafted program that I'll enjoy using for two reasons: 1) it gives me another option for grouping icons and tray items and 2) it gives me something new to play with.
